INTRODUCTION
《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 과일을 매개로 인간의 심리와 사회적 시선, 그리고 겉과 속이 다른 이중성을 탐구하는 최성덕 작가의 작업 세계를 조명하는 전시이다.
이번 전시는 르네 마그리트의 「이것은 파이프가 아니다」가 제기한 이미지와 실재의 관계에서 출발한다. 마그리트가 파이프의 이미지를 통해
‘그림 속 파이프는 실제 파이프가 아니다’라는 사실을 드러냈다면, 최성덕은 과일의 이미지를 통해 ‘우리가 과일이라고 부르는 것은 과연 무엇인가’를 질문한다.
작가에게 과일은 자연물이 아니라 인간의 내면을 비추는 상징적 대상이다.
전시의 또 다른 핵심은 존 버거의 『Ways of Seeing』에서 비롯된 ‘보는 방식’에 대한 문제의식이다.
보는 행위는 대상을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 중립적인 행위가 아니라, 사회적 기준과 개인의 경험, 편견과 욕망이 개입된 해석의 과정이다.
최성덕은 외형을 기준으로 가치가 판단되는 과일의 현실을 통해, 인간 역시 표정과 겉모습으로 쉽게 규정되는 사회의 모습을 드러낸다.
작품 속 과일은 인간의 얼굴과 결합하며 하이브리드한 형상으로 나타난다.
과일의 표면은 타인의 시선과 사회적 평가를 상징하고, 내부는 숨겨진 감정과 심리의 영역을 드러낸다.
색안경, 눈이 없는 얼굴, 일그러진 표정과 같은 요소들은 편견, 방어기제, 억압된 감정을 시각화한다.
이를 통해 작가는 인간이 사회 속에서 자신을 보호하기 위해 만들어내는 가면과, 그 가면 뒤에 숨겨진 불안과 욕망을 보여준다.
따라서 《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 과일을 그린 전시가 아니다.
이 전시는 과일이라는 익숙한 이미지를 통해 인간을 바라보는 방식, 타인을 판단하는 기준, 그리고 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이의 간극을 탐구하는 전시이다.
관람객은 전시를 통해 묻게 된다. 우리는 과연 대상을 있는 그대로 보고 있는가.
우리가 보는 것은 사물의 본질인가, 아니면 사회적 기준과 개인적 편견이 만들어낸 이미지인가.
그리고 만약 내가 과일이라면, 사람들은 나를 어떻게 바라볼까.
《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 이 질문들을 통해 익숙한 세계를 다시 보게 한다.
과일의 얼굴을 통해 인간의 얼굴을, 과일의 표면을 통해 사회의 시선을, 과일의 내부를 통해 숨겨진 심리를 바라보게 하는 전시이다.

《This Is Not a Fruit》 sheds light on the artistic world of Seong Deok Choi,
who uses fruit as a medium to explore human psychology, the social gaze, and the duality between outward appearance and inner reality.
The exhibition begins with the relationship between image and reality raised by René Magritte’s This Is Not a Pipe.
Just as Magritte used the image of a pipe to reveal that “the pipe in the painting is not an actual pipe,” Choi uses images of fruit to ask, “What exactly is it that we call fruit?”
For the artist, fruit is not simply an object of nature, but a symbolic form that reflects the human inner world.
Another central theme of the exhibition is the question of “ways of seeing,” inspired by John Berger’s Ways of Seeing.
Seeing is not a neutral act of accepting an object as it is. Rather, it is a process of interpretation shaped by social standards, personal experience, prejudice, and desire.
By drawing attention to the reality in which fruit is judged by its outward appearance, Choi reveals a society in which people, too, are easily defined by their expressions and appearances.
In the works, fruit merges with human faces to form hybrid figures.
The surface of the fruit symbolizes the gaze of others and society’s judgment, while its interior reveals a realm of hidden emotions and psychological states.
Elements such as tinted glasses, eyeless faces, and distorted expressions visualize prejudice, defense mechanisms, and repressed emotions.
Through these elements, the artist reveals the masks people create to protect themselves within society, as well as the anxieties and desires concealed behind them.
Therefore, 《This Is Not a Fruit》 is not an exhibition about fruit.
Through the familiar image of fruit, the exhibition explores how we perceive others, the standards by which we judge them, and the gap between what is visible and what remains unseen.
The exhibition invites viewers to ask: Do we truly see things as they are?
Are we seeing the essence of an object, or merely an image shaped by social standards and personal biases?
And if I were a fruit, how would others see me?
Through these questions, 《This Is Not a Fruit》 invites us to see the familiar world anew.
It is an exhibition that allows us to see the human face through the face of fruit, society’s gaze through its surface, and the hidden psyche through its interior.
