INTRODUCTION

《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 과일을 매개로 인간의 심리와 사회적 시선, 그리고 겉과 속이 다른 이중성을 탐구하는 최성덕 작가의 작업 세계를 조명하는 전시이다.

이번 전시는 르네 마그리트의 「이것은 파이프가 아니다」가 제기한 이미지와 실재의 관계에서 출발한다. 마그리트가 파이프의 이미지를 통해 ‘그림 속 파이프는 실제 파이프가 아니다’라는 사실을 드러냈다면, 최성덕은 과일의 이미지를 통해 ‘우리가 과일이라고 부르는 것은 과연 무엇인가’를 질문한다. 작가에게 과일은 자연물이 아니라 인간의 내면을 비추는 상징적 대상이다.

전시의 또 다른 핵심은 존 버거의 『Ways of Seeing』에서 비롯된 ‘보는 방식’에 대한 문제의식이다. 보는 행위는 대상을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 중립적인 행위가 아니라, 사회적 기준과 개인의 경험, 편견과 욕망이 개입된 해석의 과정이다. 최성덕은 외형을 기준으로 가치가 판단되는 과일의 현실을 통해, 인간 역시 표정과 겉모습으로 쉽게 규정되는 사회의 모습을 드러낸다.

작품 속 과일은 인간의 얼굴과 결합하며 하이브리드한 형상으로 나타난다. 과일의 표면은 타인의 시선과 사회적 평가를 상징하고, 내부는 숨겨진 감정과 심리의 영역을 드러낸다. 색안경, 눈이 없는 얼굴, 일그러진 표정과 같은 요소들은 편견, 방어기제, 억압된 감정을 시각화한다. 이를 통해 작가는 인간이 사회 속에서 자신을 보호하기 위해 만들어내는 가면과, 그 가면 뒤에 숨겨진 불안과 욕망을 보여준다.

따라서 《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 과일을 그린 전시가 아니다. 이 전시는 과일이라는 익숙한 이미지를 통해 인간을 바라보는 방식, 타인을 판단하는 기준, 그리고 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이의 간극을 탐구하는 전시이다.
관람객은 전시를 통해 묻게 된다. 우리는 과연 대상을 있는 그대로 보고 있는가.

우리가 보는 것은 사물의 본질인가, 아니면 사회적 기준과 개인적 편견이 만들어낸 이미지인가. 그리고 만약 내가 과일이라면, 사람들은 나를 어떻게 바라볼까.
《이것은 과일이 아니다》는 이 질문들을 통해 익숙한 세계를 다시 보게 한다. 과일의 얼굴을 통해 인간의 얼굴을, 과일의 표면을 통해 사회의 시선을, 과일의 내부를 통해 숨겨진 심리를 바라보게 하는 전시이다.

This Is Not a Fruit is an exhibition that sheds light on the artistic world of Choi Sung Deok, who explores human psychology, social perception, and the duality between outward appearance and inner reality through the motif of fruit.

This exhibition begins with the relationship between image and reality raised by René Magritte’s This Is Not a Pipe. If Magritte revealed through the image of a pipe that “the pipe in the painting is not an actual pipe,” Choi raises the question through the image of fruit: “What exactly is it that we call fruit?” For the artist, fruit is not merely a natural object, but a symbolic subject that reflects the inner world of human beings.

Another key point of the exhibition is the question of “ways of seeing,” derived from John Berger’s Ways of Seeing. The act of seeing is not a neutral process of accepting an object as it is, but a process of interpretation shaped by social standards, personal experience, prejudice, and desire. Through the reality of fruit, whose value is often judged by its outer appearance, Choi reveals a society in which human beings are also easily defined by their expressions and outward appearances.

In the works, fruit appears as a hybrid form combined with the human face. The surface of the fruit symbolizes the gaze of others and social evaluation, while its interior reveals the realm of hidden emotions and psychological states. Elements such as tinted glasses, faceless eyes, and distorted expressions visualize prejudice, defense mechanisms, and suppressed emotions. Through these images, the artist reveals the masks that people create to protect themselves in society, as well as the anxiety and desire hidden behind those masks.

Therefore, This Is Not a Fruit is not simply an exhibition about fruit. It is an exhibition that explores the way we look at human beings, the standards by which we judge others, and the gap between what is visible and what remains unseen through the familiar image of fruit.

Through the exhibition, viewers are led to ask: Are we truly seeing objects as they are?

Is what we see the essence of things, or is it an image shaped by social standards and personal prejudice? And if I were a fruit, how would others see me?

This Is Not a Fruit invites viewers to see the familiar world anew through these questions. Through the face of fruit, we encounter the human face; through the surface of fruit, we confront the gaze of society; and through the interior of fruit, we look into hidden psychological depths.
